CCM takes part in the WOOD4PLASTIC project

CCM takes part in the WOOD4PLASTIC project to develop compostable bioplastic from wood processing waste.

CCM announces its participation in the WOOD4PLASTIC project, which is funded by the European Union as part of its LIFE2023 programme. The project aims to use wood processing waste from European forestry to make high added value biodegradable and compostable bioplastics.

WOOD4PLASTIC aims to promote more sustainable plastics manufacturing, and contribute to reducing industry’s CO2 footprint with bio-based materials. The project focuses on optimising the process of converting wood processing waste into fermentable sugars and lignin, which can then be used as the building blocks for bioplastics, biomaterials and bioproducts. This involves technical challenges relating to the purification of sugars and the processing of lignin to obtain raw materials for the production of compostable plastics.

Among its principal applications, WOOD4PLASTIC aims to develop an innovative thermoformed paper tray, coated with compostable biomaterials, for storing food, which also has excellent ecological performance. The process involves advanced extrusion, coating and thermo-lamination technologies to ensure that the product satisfies the standards of the market while also being eco-compatible.

The project will also assess a variety of end-of-life scenarios, including industrial and home composting and recycling into the paper value chain, as well as exploring new options for the use of the material.

Thanks to our collaboration with our partners in three European countries, CCM is involved in optimising technologies for the production of compostable bioplastics with a high potential for replication, thus also contributing to the growth of a circular, sustainable economy.
